Nella classifica dei migliori 500 brani di sempre, stilata nel 2004 da Rolling Stone, “For What It’s Worth”, anthem dei Buffalo Springfield dalle forti connotazioni politiche anti Vietnam occupa la posizione N° 63, immediatamente prima di “She Loves You” dei Beatles e “Sunshine of Your Love” dei Cream, e precedendo pure, di diverse lunghezze, il primo dei brani dei Byrds, “Mr. Tambourine Man”, 79°. Un dato significativo che dice molto (ma non tutto) sul peso avuto sui destini della musica rock dalla formazione fondata nel ’66 dagli appena 21-enni Neil Young e Stephen Stills. L’aura mitologica che oggi circonda i Buffalo Springfield è certamente giustificata dall’essere stati pionieri talentuosi e seminali (la critica oggi non ha difficoltà a riconoscere loro meriti almeno pari a quelli dei Byrds e dei Beach Boys) di un certo innovativo sound folk/country/rock weastcostiano, fatto di armonie vocali impareggiabili, come non se ne erano mai sentite di eguali in precedenza, dal numero esiguo di album (tre: l’esordio omonimo “Buffalo Springfield”, poi “Buffalo Springfield Again” e “Last Time Around”) incisi nel loro breve percorso (tra il giugno ’66 e l’aprile ’68), dal fatto che i suoi componenti non hanno mai ceduto alla lusinghe compromissorie di insipide reunion, di aver concentrato nel breve arco della loro attività di gruppo una serie concreta di pezzi significativi che hanno gettato le basi agli sviluppi futuri contestualizzati dai vari componenti in altre formazioni (Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young, Poco e Loggins & Messina), ed anche anticipato strade intraprese nel country-rock da gruppi quali i Flying Burrito Brothers. Non è corretto, alla luce della storia, definire i Buffalo Springfield un ‘supergruppo’ (di Stills e Young sappiamo ed abbiamo già detto, gli altri erano il cantante/chitarrista Richie Furay, il batterista Dewey Martin ed il bassista Bruce Palmer, più avanti rilevato da Jim Messina) perché all’epoca i suoi componenti erano dei perfetti sconosciuti. La loro storia viene perfettamente incorniciata in questo cofanetto curato con certosina attenzione filologica da Neil e Stephen: 88 brani in tutto per oltre 4 ore complessive tra cui spiccano, oltre l’intera produzione ufficiale rimasterizzata (mancano due brani da “Last Time Around” uscito a band oramai sciolta), una trentina di demo (ben 11 inediti) tra cui numerosi pezzi che vedono il solo Neil chitarra e voce, e diverse alternate version. Nel quarto disco sono contenuti i primi due album del gruppo con le originarie track-list. Nel complesso si evidenzia la prolificità compositiva si Stephen e Neil, autentiche anime creative del gruppo, e si elevano sugli altri brani come la fluviale “Bluebird”, “For What It’s Worth“, ormai un evergreen del repertorio classic-rock che racchiude in sé tutta l’essenza del vento della contestazione alla guerra in Vietnam, l’energico “Mr. Soul“, la delicata “Expecting to Fly” e ancora “I Am A Child” e “Broken Arrow”. Non si tratta di un prodotto inedito – la sua prima pubblicazione in un elegante cofanetto a tiratura limitata risale al 2001 – ma il prezzo assolutamente interessante ci ha convinti della bontà della segnalazione. Manca però qualsiasi pezzo live, cosa che ci impedisce di accedere alla rinomata ‘ferocia’ delle loro esibizioni dal vivo.
