Era stato il Mucchio Selvaggio, nel 1977, a far conoscere nel nostro paese le qualità cantautorali di Bruce Cockburn, che pure aveva già all’attivo alcuni album di successo nel suo paese prontamente recuperati dal nucleo di fan che si andava componendo. Cockburn rimane uno dei più importanti songwriter della generazione di post-dylaniani, secondo solo – in quanto ad area geografica di provenienza, il Canada – a Leonard Cohen, Neil Young e Joni Mitchell. Oggi è tempo di bilanci per il canadese, è il momento di mettere dei paletti al vissuto per prepararsi (forse) ad un restart per il futuro, così il nostro, che ha speso molti degli ultimi lustri in un fervido attivismo politico, ci regala (si fa per dire visto che costa circa 130 euro) un corposo box antologico (in edizione limitata, e copie numerate e autografate) e pure un libro, “Rumours of Glory: A Memoir” fatto di memorie del passato artistico e non, che parte dalla sua infanzia in quel di Ottawa e passa per l’inquieto suo girovagare per giungere a riflessioni di natura religiosa (l’adesione al Cristianesimo) e politica sulla crisi dei valori odierni e sui danni arrecati dal capitalismo. Il monumentale cofanetto curato personalmente da Bruce aggiunge il resto, la parte per noi più importante, lo spessore compositivo, l’eclettismo indiscusso servito da ballate inusuali e spiritual d’impronta evangelica, da canzoni d’amore profondamente liriche e di protesta che fanno riflettere. Una sintesi mirabile degli oltre trenta album incisi: “Sunwheel Dance“, “Night Vision” e “Salt, Sun and Time” i primi importanti fondamenti, “In the Falling Dark” dal sapore vanmorrisoniano alla “Astral Weeks” disco della consacrazione, il magnifico “The Charity Of Night” del 1996 giunto dopo un periodo di stanca creativa, l’etno-world di “Breakfast in New Orleans Dinner in Timbuktu“. Canzoni come per esempio “If A Tree Falls“, “Wondering Where The Lions Are“, “Call It Democracy“, “One Day I Walk”, una delle prime perle, il blues acustico di “My Hometown Avalon”, “Rocket Launcher”, il brano scritto dopo l’incontro in Guatemala con i sopravvissuti al genocidio della gente Maya; e ancora l’elegiaca “Wise Users“, la meditative “Grinning Moon“, “You Don’t Have to Play the Horses” e “Silver Wheels” altri tra i suoi capolavori,  brani  che esaltano il felice fingerpicking acustico accanto alla crescente dimensione elettrificata. In più ci sono una quindicina di “rare & previously unreleased songs” (nell’ottavo disco) in cui è difficile indicare punti fermi se non a rischio di trascurarne altri. Il suggello arriva con il DVD che testimonia di un concerto live inedito e completo (unico in carriera disponibile) del 2008 durante lo Slice Of Live Tour, più un libro di 116 pagine con foto rare e note dettagliate brano per brano. Certo il prezzo è alto per ritrovarsi con una compilation antologica di otto dischi con qualche inedito e un live, e solo i fan più duri si possono orientare all’acquisto, ma fate voi.
